Recommended Bar Spacing and Cage Sizes for Pet Birds

A good cage is not just a cage, but a home for your pet bird in which he or she can fly freely and feel safe. That's why your bird needs all the comfort and space he or she can get, but most cages are too small to allow birds to fly and can severely restrict the bird’s ability to exercise. So when you are looking for a new cage for your bird, or you are just getting your first cage, keep these things in mind:

  1. There should be sufficient room for the bird to fully extend its wings and to fly without damaging itself

  2. The minimum width of a cage for multiple birds should be three times their combined wingspan.

  3. If your cage has perches, the cage should provide room for the bird to fly between perches and at least one perch should be standing at shoulder height (so that your birds will feel safe).

  4. The bar spacing should be smaller for smaller birds, so they can't get their head, wings, or other parts of their body stuck between the bars.
